Dr Thea Gumbert is a registered psychologist with over 13 years of diverse experience in custodial, inpatient and community settings. She has extensive experience working with clients in the criminal justice system, including forensic disability clients, incarcerated people, and those under conditions of community supervision and treatment. In addition, she has provided psychological counselling and interventions in both inpatient and outpatient settings for adults and adolescents presenting with a range of psychological diagnoses.
Dr Gumbert has a research and practice interest in criminal justice, and has worked extensively with both perpetrators and victims of sexual and violent offences. Her Honours research examined the reliability of actuarial risk assessment for intrafamilial sexual offenders, and subsequent research focus has concerned the ways that victims of crime are perceived within the justice system. Her doctoral research examined how jurors understand and utilise evidence in sexual assault trials, and their application of burden of proof instructions.
Informed by many years of interaction with people in the criminal justice system, and others affected by crime, Dr Gumbert approaches assessment from a holistic and humanistic perspective, utilising state-of-the-art, evidence-based psychometric instruments and providing comprehensive, detailed reports.
